Barriers Between Stations
Since the light rail will be running at ground level through the majority of the corridor, pedestrian crossings are a safety concern. Therefore the trackway needs to have barriers on either side of the tracks between stations to eliminate that concern. There will be a small wall (about 9") to hold up the ballast (the rocks under the ties and rail). The ballast wall will always be about 9" from the top of rail, although the height will vary on the street side, depending on the height of the street. On top of the ballast wall, there will be a barrier/fence. In locations where there is a noise impact, the ballast walls will be higher and take the place of a fence. Noise barrier aesthetics were shown at the Urban Design committee meeting in August. To see drawings of ballast walls and barriers click here.
