The RTD Board of Directors approved a $140 million two-phased contract award to Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Inc. (BBII) to design and build the 2.3 mile-long Southeast Rail Extension from Lincoln to RidgeGate Parkway. The decision took place during the Board of Directors meeting July 28, 2015. Design  began during fall 2015 with construction starting in spring 2016. Read more.

In July 2014, the RTD Board authorized an extension of the existing Southeast Light Rail Line farther south into Lone Tree. RTD has applied for $92 million in federal funds and has been accepted into the first phase of the Federal Transit Administration Small Starts funding program. Small Starts provides funding of between $75-100 million for projects.

Additionally, local business associations and businesses in the southeast metro Denver area are contributing $25 million in cash and an estimated $3 million in in-kind contributions for land and right-of-way to get the light rail extension project completed.

This local match amounts to 12.5 percent of the project cost and far exceeds the 2.5 percent match RTD has asked of its local partners. The project's total cost is $233.1 million.

When the extension is open for revenue service in 2019, residents will be able to travel from the RidgeGate station on the new R Line through Aurora to Peoria Station and connect to the commuter train to Denver International Airport. They will be able to travel from RidgeGate to Union Station on the E Line and from RidgeGate to 18th and California in downtown Denver on the F Line.

The Southeast Rail Line Extension will make the Southeast line even more
successful than it is today. The current plan is to extend light rail
transit service to the new RidgeGate Parkway Interchange by providing
the following:
  • Kiss-n-Ride station at Sky Ridge Medical Center
  • Kiss-n-Ride station at Lone Tree City Center
  • New end-of-line station at RidgeGate with a 1,300 space Park-n-Ride facility
