The Southwest Corridor Extension will make the Southwest line even more successful than it is today. The current plan is to extend light rail transit service to Highlands Ranch by providing the following:
  • 2.5 miles of additional light rail
  • An end-of-line station at C-470 and Lucent Boulevard
  • 1,000 space park-n-Ride facility at the new station
An intermediate station, located near the southeast corner of the C-470 and South Santa Fe Drive interchange is also being considered as part of this current phase
of study. This station is currently not a part of the FasTracks plan.

The Southwest Corridor light rail line opened in July 2000 as an 8.7-mile extension from I-25/Broadway to Mineral Avenue in Littleton. The Southwest Corridor has five stations with nearly 2,600 parking spaces.

Call for innovation

Over the past few years, RTD has been very public with its "call for innovation" to the private sector asking for solutions to help RTD complete the partially funded FasTracks projects as soon as possible. This was the premise behind RTD's first industry forum called, Transformation Through Transportation, which was held Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011.

"We've been encouraging the industry to think outside the box and invest in our projects to get them done sooner rather than later," said RTD General Manager Phil Washington.

RTD will continue to pursue alternative funding sources for the program to include grants and future private sector and government partnerships that further advance any and all partially funded FasTracks corridors.
