Signs of Construction: Communications

The communication system serves as the hub for the I-225 Rail Line. It is responsible for collecting information from communication elements such as the variable message signs (VMS), closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, public address (PA) system, as well as processing information sent from the Traction Power Substations (TPSS) and signal houses. This data is gathered in communication houses, which are 6-by-10 foot silver boxes at every station platform, and transmitted to the operations control center through a fiber optic cable. Trained personnel inside the control center use this information to manage train operations by displaying messages on the VMS boards at the station platforms (such as train departure/arrival time) and by making announcements over the PA system. CCTV is another important element of the communication system, which transmits images back to a security control center for surveillance.
