About The Project
RTD is proposing a Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility to be built on the existing Platte Division bus maintenance facility, located just north of 31st Street between the South Platte River and I-25. An Environmental Assessment (EA) will be conducted to develop detailed plans for the proposed facility, identify potential impacts caused by it and, if necessary, propose mitigation measures for those impacts and identify associated costs. The impacts evaluated include noise, vibration, emissions, economics, traffic, right-of-way issues and land use among others.Public input will be an important criteria considered throughout the EA. We encourage you to use this Web site as a resource for important information throughout the assessment.
Site Selection
Twenty-four potential Commuter Rail Maintenance sites were studied under the East Corridor Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in 2006. The originally selected site, the Union Pacific Railroad's 36th Street Yard/Trailer on Flatcar (TOFC) Intermodal Facility at 40th Street/40th Avenue, was unable to be purchased as originally planned. RTD re-evaluated the originally considered sites to find one that would:
- minimally impact the community
- connect the rail corridors on RTD controlled tracks
- serve daily operational needs
- meet the size requirements of the facility

Facility Functions
This new facility will be used to repair, maintain, clean, fuel, and store the 80 - 110 vehicles that will serve the four FasTracks commuter rail lines: Gold Line, East Corridor, Northwest Rail and North Metro. It will support both electrical multiple unit (EMU) vehicles (for Gold Line and East Corridor) and diesel multiple unit (DMU) vehicles (for Northwest Rail and North Metro).
Bus Maintenance Facility Relocation
The current Platte Division Bus Maintenance Facility will need to be relocated because the site is not large enough for both facilities. Click here to learn more about the relocation of the Bus Maintenance Facility.
