Aurora mayor eyes loan to RTD to speed up work on I-225 light rail

Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan envisions asking Aurora voters in 2013 for a tax increase to complete the light rail project from East Iliff Avenue to Smith Road near Interstate 70. If approved, Aurora would front the money to RTD, which would oversee the construction of the project, then the city could get reimbursed for the costs over time.

Yale bridge work over I-225 begins this weekend

The start of work on the I-225 Light Rail extension has officially begun. The existing Yale Bridge over I-225 will be taken down, and will eventually be replaced with a larger bridge spanning the highway, to make room for light rail and widening of I-225 below.

The agencies involved in the project - including the cities of Denver and Aurora, RTD, and the Union Pacific Railroad - are hosting a public meeting to discuss the planned train stop and new crossing on Peoria near Smith Road. RTD said it hopes to have work complete on the rail stop at Peoria and East 30th Avenue in 2016. The rail stop will be part of the East Rail Line, which will run a commuter train along the I-70 corridor to Denver International Airport.
