Signs of Construction: Track Work on the Line

Did you know there is a whole world of systems lying beneath light rail tracks?

Installing track for a light rail project involves much more than meets the eye. There are multiple layers of systems underneath the track that serve several different purposes.

There are pipes to provide drainage (an under-drain), a conduit and wire system to generate power (a duct bank), plus signals and communication for the train. Above the duct bank and under-drain is the sub-ballast, the bottom layer of rock that rests on the ground and provides the foundation of the track. On top of the sub-ballast is the ballast, an additional layer of rock that supports the track and concrete ties. This intricate sub-structure supporting the track is vital in providing passengers a safe and comfortable ride.
